Experimenting with mediums

The Strand
Acrylic on 140# paper 16 X 20

Before Christmas I started to play with acrylics on top of old watercolor paper. First I covered the watercolor with gesso and used various tools to make texture in the underpainting. Then I started layering acrylic paint with the dark blue strand from left to right. I used brushes and paper towels to achieve the blended colors I was looking for. On top of the dark blue I spread some glass gel medium (for some reason I love this stuff and bought two containers of it). I continued adding paint letting it dry between layers until I decided it was the way I wanted it. I think if you click on it you will be able to see the effect of the glass gel medium. There will be more to come.
In case I don't get back here, Happy New Year!

A Gift for a Granddaughter

Jenny's Gift
Acrylic on Canvas 16 X 20

Our oldest grandchild, Jenny, just got married the end of October. She said she would like an abstract painting, something mostly blue 14 to 16 inches. After looking in some decorator magazines and remembering some paintings I saw in model homes the trend seems to be a soft blending of color. So I got out my acrylics and had fun blending paint on the canvas. I used cobalt and Pthalo blue with a lot of white, added a little bit of light green and metallic copper for the compliment. If you look closely you'll see that there are two areas of texture which is glass bead gel. I covered the whole thing with an iridescent medium to give it a lovely sheen. Unfortunately that does not show up on the picture. Hope she likes it!

A Little Whimsy

Puff
Watercolor 16 X 20

Sometimes I like to make textured backgrounds for  watercolor paintings. I  use different papers, gauze, mark makers, or whatever. Often I have something in mind, most of the time I'm just loosening up, playing with the paint and my "toys". As I looked at this, after it had dried, I liked it the way it was, the gauze had made a creature shape that looked like a dragon to me. So, I named it Puff. I'm enjoying him for now, maybe someday he'll be turned into something else. After all, he is magic!

Travel Time Art

Banana Blossom
Sketch book painting

I was able to do one painting while I was in Hawaii. We were with family for a wedding so there was lots of activity and very little time for getting out the watercolors or sketchbook. This was painted from a picture I took at the Garden of Eden on Maui. Bananas form from the top or stem of the blossom and continue as the stem grows. So this blossom will get smaller as more bananas form on the top. Really an unusual plant. After a stalk produces fruit it dies and new shoots come up from the base of the plant. Hawaii's climate seems to be perfect for bananas as well as pineapple and many other tropical fruits. There is a 6 hour time difference between Florida and Hawaii, I'm just getting adjusted after a week being back. It's good to be home!

First Show of the Season

My Magnolia
Watercolor 15 X 15

October is the beginning of the art show season here. The first show at the art league was to be specific to our area of southwest Florida. I have a magnolia tree that blooms every spring and I love to take pictures of the flowers and paint them. This is one of the pictures that I entered into the show. It got many compliments but no mention by the judge. And that's they way it goes at art shows! There were many fine paintings entered, we are a group of very talented artists and the competition is steep but most of us are very supportive of one another. Artists make pretty good friends, I think. We have a nice opening reception with food and wine. It's good to be back in the swing of things.

What I Learned

Moonlight Serenade
Collage 10 X 10

I did another collage with my lady in the Klempt style dress. I must admit that while I have a general idea of what I will put together with the colors and theme, after I get going it evolves into a life of it's own. I find I need something for this space, or I need to tone down that and add a little more of this. It is so unlike planning and painting a watercolor.

My lady was an acrylic transfer and was rather ghost-like when it was applied. She disappeared into the dark background. So, I had to paint over most of her with acrylic so she could be seen. The take away from this was, acrylic transfers must be placed on a lighter background. My "aha moment". Some things are taught better by experience!

Lesson #2

Tropical Fish with Coral
Watercolor

In my beginner art class we practiced sunset skies again. Into these skies I had them practice blowing tree branches with the straw method. Blowing reduces the fear factor of making it look perfect. This method was shown to me in workshop with Lian Quan Zhen a few years ago and we painted tropical fish with coral which will be  Lesson number 2. It looks complicated but the fish are drawn on and then masked off with masking fluid. When that is dry blobs of paint are blown into coral shapes with a straw. It's a fun way to put in an otherwise complicated background that can tend to get too picky.
I'm teaching at a wonderful facility which is called Lifeline Family Center. It's a residence where young mothers get prenatal care, education, parenting classes, and counseling. In about two years they are ready to support themselves and their children. Some of them go on to higher education. Art is a way to have fun and enrich their lives. Two of my students have just had their babies and are on maternity leave from classes so they concentrate on caring for and bonding with their babies. As a result, I am down to one student for the time being.

Watercolor Lessons

 Sunset Palm 2
Watercolor 9.5 X 7.75

Sunset Palm 1
Watercolor 9.5 X 7.35

I've been asked to teach an art class to some young women and it has been a struggle for me. I'm starting from scratch and the lessons have to be simple enough to accomplish in a 2 hour session. Thanks to a video by Jean Lursen, a fellow blogger, I have a simple sunset to try. The top one was done with Mission paints plus payne's gray for the dark area. The bottom one with quin. gold and orange. I'm going to go with the brighter colors for today's class.
I hope I have some student work to post in the future.

Bird In The Hand

Bird In The Hand
Collage, 6 X 6

I left some of the strings from the string paper on the collage. When the collage is mounted on a panel they will add some interest to the piece. The string paper is made by layering string in between two pieces of tissue paper and then coating with diluted acrylic and gloss medium.

Bird In The Hand
(detail)
Collage 6 X 6

This shows the collage a little larger for detail. It's made of a combination of hand made papers, magazine pages that have been altered and commercial papers. Everything has been coated with
acrylic gloss medium and heat fused to 140# paper. I plan to mount it on a wood panel but it could be matted and framed as well. I think I'm going to have some fun with this bored looking lady holding different objects, quite a few things come to mind. Do you have a suggestion? Make a comment below. Thanks for taking time to read my blog.

Afternoon Wine in the Garden
Watercolor, 8 X 8

I painted this from one of the many photos I took at Butchart Gardens when we visited a few years ago. It's another watercolor that I intend to mount on a gallery wrapped canvas and apply wax. I really like the looks of the presentation and I hope that buyers do too. The Primroses I posted a few weeks ago were also from that collection of pictures and have been waxed and look great.

Bright Sunflower

Bright Sunflower
8 X 8 watercolor mounted on wood panel

This is one of three watercolors I have finished  and mounted so that they are ready to wax with Dorland's Wax Medium. This will protect them and give them a soft finish without the glare of glass in a frame. Because there is no costly framing, I can offer them for sale for less expense to me and to the buyer. They are not permitted in the bigger watercolor shows, though. Those still have to be shown under glass or acrylic.

Small watercolor paintings

Primrose
Watercolor 6 X 6
Mounted on wrapped canvas and waxed

I'm working on some small watercolors that I can mount on either wrapped canvas or wood panels and protect with archival wax instead of putting them under glass. It's the best of both worlds, watercolor art but displayed with no glass reflections to get in the way of enjoyment. I spay them with UV protective acrylic first and then coat them with several layers of Dorland's wax. I like the results very much and I hope customers do too.

Painting and Posting

Koi Pond
Acrylic on wrapped canvas 10 X 10

I've been painting quite a lot lately. I have 3 classes a week during the summer just to keep me busy. So busy that I haven't had time to post in my blog or to read the blogs of the artists I follow.
This acrylic pour I posted before without the fish. I just thought it needed something more. I printed out some pictures that I took at a koi pond, cut out the fish and positioned them on the painting. When I found the right size and shape I just painted them in.  I like the result.

Flamingo Collage

Flamingo
Acrylic and Collage

I don't know how time can disappear like it does. I have a hard time keeping up with the blog these days. That said, on with the painting. This is a do-over. It was an all acrylic painting of a flamingo on a full sheet of watercolor paper. After languishing in a frame for more than a year I decided to take it out and collage on it. My inspiration is Elizabeth St Hilaire, who does this type of collage. I love her work! I decided to crop the Flamingo into a smaller format, picked out some papers that were mostly manufactured plus a couple of hand painted papers and cut and tore pieces to cover the whole bird. It was quite a challenge but fun. Everything is adhered with acrylic mat medium. I left the original background because I like how it was done in a loose, drippy, transparent manner.

Blue Water
Acrylic 16 X 20

It started out as an abstract, it has quite a lot of collage in it and many layers of paint. Then the two little sailboats turned up so I let them stay. Maybe after awhile I'll paint them out. Right now I think I  will call it finished and start something else.

Abstract Landscape

Abstract Landscape
12 X 18 Acrylic on paper

I'm still going to an abstract class on Saturday mornings. This is a work in progress, but it's in my attempt at something non-tropical, having a more southwestern feel. It looks quite pink in the picture, instead of the soft orange I was going for. Acrylic color mixing is so different from watercolor, it takes a lot of adjustment. It's quite the learning curve.
I thought I'd post it anyway, before the day and then the week gets away from me. I miss that push of the 30 in 30, that really gets my juices flowing.

White Flowers

Bush Roses
Watercolor 11 X 7.25

White flowers are always a fun challenge. You need to keep them white while still laying in interesting shadows. I loved this picture of the roses in the sunlight at Portland's Rose Garden. This painting has an abstract feeling to it with the roses floating cloud like in the picture, cropping it in a little would eliminate that some, but after doing some abstract work I kind of like that feeling. I did the painting by masking out the flowers and doing the dark background first. Personally, I think it's just as easy to paint the dark colors around the subject without using the mask and all the steps that takes.

Fauvism

Yellow Road
Acrylic on paper 18 X 24

My Saturday Abstract class was on Fauvism. They were the artists who wanted to deviate from the norm of realistic renderings after photography became popular. People no longer needed an artist to do a portrait, they wanted a photographer. Instead of smooth strokes, they painted with short strokes of varying hues. This painting is my attempt at that style. Only the red roof is smooth for contrast.  I outlined my subjects with black at the end. We painted very quickly without over thinking it. It was harder than it looks! It sort of reminds me of Van Gough, at least that's what my husband remarked. It was fun getting out of the usual way of doing things.

The Collage

Well, I fooled around with PicMonkey for about an hour yesterday and gave up. I could not find the way to make my own grid. Whenever I hit the "make your own" button it came up with one big square, when I tried to add another picture it went underneath the first one. No way was I getting a grid! I may look in another program for the collage feature but right now the frustration level has me feeling quite negative.

One the other hand, my abstract class this morning was fun. We worked on Fauve-ism. Everyone in the class came up with wonderful pictures, I will post mine when it is ready.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 30

Sail at Dawn
Watercolor 15 X 15

30 days completed! Hooray! I'm very happy that I did this, it's a good kind of discipline. Sometimes I haven't been giving myself "permission" to paint because of other things I think I ought to be doing. I could now set that aside, I had a deadline to keep.

This painting was started as a wash a long time ago, I don't remember what I had in mind when I did it, but I had an iridescent coating over the whole thing. I decided to put sailboats in it and define the horizon line and clouds a little more. Maybe I'll put in some seagulls as well. It was a fun find to work on. It was difficult to photograph well, maybe the iridescence interfered.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 29

Speckled Rooster
Watercolor 5.5 X 7.5

I took a picture of this rooster at a friend's house. She lives in a rural area on a few acres and has a few chickens. It's a hassle to keep them safe from the coyotes and other wildlife but the reward is wonderful, fresh eggs.
It's the second to last day of the 30 in 30, it's been quite a challenge. I think tomorrow will be a collage of all my paintings if I can figure out how to do it. I remember getting very frustrated with the process in the past, I hope it will be easier for me this time.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 28

Lacy Flowers III
Watercolor 11 X 7.5

Of the three lacy flower paintings so far, I like this one the best. I love the purple and green combo and the way it makes the white of flowers just glow. It goes to show you that doing one thing over a few times leads to improvements. These are great fun, if you are into watercolor do try them. The flowers are made by dipping a sea sponge into masking fluid and dabbing it on the paper. When it's dry, try different combinations of watercolor, the darker the better. When that is dry remove the mask and put in a few details on the stems and flowers.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 27

Sky Windows
Acrylic on paper 18 X 24

This is a departure from the norm for me, although I get into it from time to time. I'm always learning, something I love to do. I'm taking an abstract class every Saturday morning for at least 4 weeks. I want to get better at making abstract art and learn what makes a good one. I'm finding it's fun and easy to throw on paint, something else to make a good piece. I've always loved the cruciform design so I fall back on that. I want to stretch myself to try other designs as well. There is lots of texture and movement inside each window. Click on the picture to see more detail.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 26

Lacy Flowers II
Watercolor 11 X 7.5

I wanted to try another example of the lacy flowers with lighter colors. They are not as dramatic as the ones done with the darker colors but I do like the soft, delicate approach. I may try them again with a bit darker palette. They are fun and easy to do, a great lesson for a beginning watercolorist. Because watercolors dry so much lighter that when they are wet, you have to go in with much darker colors than you think.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 25

Robin-Is It Spring?
Watercolor 11 X 7.5

When I was living in Minnesota it was always encouraging to see the first robins of spring, even if it was far from spring-like and you really wondered what they were doing there. I miss their cheery morning and evening songs but I don't miss the cold, damp, dreary weather that March often brought. Here's hoping my friends up north have an early spring. If not, here's a robin for you!

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 24

Little Green Heron
Watercolor 5.5 X 7.5

My painting got a little more detailed in the background on this one but it sort of frames the bird so I decided to leave it alone. Sometimes when I look at my photo I get carried away by the literal. I could improve this painting by making the background behind the head darker so that it becomes the focus as it should. It takes time away from a painting in order to see the obvious. I've known artists who have taken a painting out of a frame to "fix" it, maybe more than once. Ah, well, 6 more to go.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 23

Rocky Shoreline
Watercolor 9 X 11.5

The last of the paintings done in the Elaine Charney workshop. Elaine did a quick demo of this while waiting for paint to dry on her other piece. So, while I was waiting for paint to dry on one of my pieces I did this one very quickly without any drawing. Had I drawn, I would have made my rock shapes a little more believable. The idea was to work quickly and let the paint flow. It would be a good warm up exercise in loosening up.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 22

Lacy Flowers
Watercolor 11 X 15

Another painting from the workshop. The flowers were kept white by using masking fluid. We dipped a sea sponge in the fluid and made flower shapes on the paper. When that dried, we applied our dark, rich colors of alizarin crimson, mineral violet  and indigo. I came in with some quinacrodone gold after the initial wash dried. The paper has to be completely dry before the masking fluid is removed with a mask pick up. Then one can go into the floral shapes with shadows and touches of color. Stems and leaves are also added. I plan to do this one again with different color background.

February 30 in 30- Day 21

Magnolia
Watercolor 11 X 16

This was also painted in the workshop I attended with Elaine Charney. I don't usually like working with masking fluid but that was the assignment with this painting so I followed instructions, masking the flowers before painting the very wet background. It is possible to do this without masking fluid but a little trickier. I like the results and will try this one again.

February 30 in 30- Day 20

Red Riding Hood
Watercolor 11 X 15

Our third exercise in the Elaine Charney workshop was to paint a path in the woods. We were painting fast and furious, and pretty wet. Her method of painting tree trunks was a new one to me. She made vertical lines of little brush widths of alternating mineral violet and burnt sienna. Then with a wet brush barely touching the wet paint we drew the brush down starting skinny and ending fatter at the bottom. The wet paint spread into the water from the brush stroke and made a tree trunk dark on one side and light on the other. While it was still wet we drew in branches still using the wet paint from the edge. It was magic! I could still put in some more grasses or flowers in the foreground but before we knew it, it was lunch time and the afternoon was another painting.

Monday, February 19, 2018

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 19

Gold Finch
Watercolor 11 X 15

This is the second painting from the Elaine Charney workshop. We carefully painted the finch first and then added the loose background. I kept my background green so that the bird wouldn't be lost but in the original photo the background is quite golden brown and the bird disappears. An artist can make these choices, leave things out or add things. It's all part of the creative process. That's the difference between painting and photography. Each painting in the class was so varied, yet from the same photo. We all see things differently.

February 30 in 30 Days-Day 18

Sailboats Returning
Watercolor 11 X 15

Yesterday I completed a three day workshop with Elaine Charney. She's an accomplished artist from Sarasota, Florida. The workshop was at the Cape Coral Art League in Cape Coral, Florida. There were 10 students so we had a lot of one on one assistance when needed and plenty of room to spread out.
This is one of the paintings from the first day. We painted wet, loose and fast. I love painting that way so it was a treat for me. Those who like to paint more slowly and methodically were challenged.
We began this painting by wetting the paper and painting a halo of light leaving a bright center. Yellow on the inside, red next and then blue on the outer edges. When that was dry we put in the tree line and the boats. A very fun and simple painting but very effective with techniques that can be used in a variety of situations.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 17

Orange and Blue # 7 Strata
A collage from hand painted tissue.
hand made string paper, acrylic transfer
and ink heat fused to watercolor paper.
9 X 12 ready to be matted and framed.

I'm trying to stretch myself during this 30 days and that means working bigger and in different formats. I love making my collages in a square so to try a portrait format is not easy for me. I can paint that way, why not collage? I'm trying to balance color, horizontal lines, warm and cool, straight and curved lines. I think this one will take some tweaking but it's a pleasing start.

February 30 in 30 Days, Day 16

Blue and Orange # 6 Landscape
Hand painted tissue and stamped
rice paper heat sealed onto watercolor
paper and coated with gloss medium.
6 X 6 ready to mount or frame.

This simple collage has a feeling of trees in the foreground and mountains receding into the distance. It has a warm autumn day at sunset vibe. Sometimes it's just better to leave something simple alone and let it tell it's story.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 15

A Happy Heart
Collage made with hand painted brown bag, tissue,
sheet music, envelope and magazine pages with
acrylic transfer, heat sealed and coated with
gloss medium on 8 X 8 watercolor paper.
It's ready to be framed or mounted on a wooden
cradled panel.

I came across this Bible verse one day and I knew I had to put it on a collage. It's for any day, not just Valentine's day. How true that a person with a happy heart, which to me says one with an cheerful outlook on life, has a celebration of life every day. There are people who always look for the best even when things are at their worst. They will find a feast even if it's soup and bread. That's the kind of person I want to be; it's the kind of person I want to be with.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 14

Little Gem Valentine #3
3 X 3 Collage mounted on a 4 X 4
canvas panel. The collage is made with
hand painted papers, manufactured papers.
and foil paper. It is heat fused to watercolor
paper and coated with acrylic gloss medium.

This Little Gem is going to a very cute couple, the wife has been my art mentor for years and her husband, a musician, often comes with her to class. It will sit on a small wooden easel. They are symbolized by the two hearts and the notes are because they make beautiful music together.

Little Gem Valentine #2
Heat fused collage made with hand
painted  and manufactured paper.
3 X 3

My second valentine is the perfect size to fasten to a note card. It looks great on a red card and is on it's way to some special people.

February 30 in 30 Days-Day 12

Little Gem Valentine 1
Collage on paper 3 X 3

Valentine's Day is almost here so I'm posting a few Valentines that I have made for the occasion. These will be fastened to cards to be mailed to my favorite people (family). They were made with hand painted tissue paper, heat bonded to paper and sealed with gloss medium acrylic.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 11

Orange and Blue series # 5 Abstract
Painted tissue, art paper, acrylic transfer,
watercolor crayon, gloss acrylic, on paper. 8 X 8

I'm still continuing to explore putting shades of orange and blue together. The papers are random pieces I made last year. Some days I just make papers of different types in different colors for future use with no particular artwork in mind. It comes in handy for a stretch of work like this because it takes several days and lots of space to paint and gloss papers for use in my collages. It's like having the ingredients for cookies in the pantry. It's nice to have a choice of flavors.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 10

Orange and Blue # 4
Birds on a Wire
Mixed Media Collage Tissue, Art paper,
Acrylic transfer heat fused on paper
mounted on black card stock. 4 X 4

This is another "Little Gem" in my orange and blue series. All but one little bird is watching the sunset over the water, perhaps the nonconformist is watching the reflections. I'm 1/3rd through the 30 Days, I hope I make it to the end and that my friends who are painting the 30 in 30 will make it too.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 9

Orange and Blue #3, Butterfly
Panted deli paper, tissue, collage
paper, acrylic transfer, and ink on
paper mounted on black background.
4 X 4

I call these little collage paintings "Little Gems". I try to keep the design simple with something recognizable in it to mount on a little canvas or put in a small table frame. They make attractive hostess gifts or souvenirs.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 8

Orange and Blue Series #2 Dragonflies
Painted tissue, altered magazine pages,
acrylic, and ink on heat fused on paper. 6 X 6

Late posting today; I'm having fun keeping up with the painting and posting every day. It will be a true challenge this month, my busiest time of the year, to keep up. Good luck to us all!

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 7

Cat Series # 3 Sits Silently
Mixed media collage,  5 X 5
Acrylic, altered magazine pages, ink, gloss medium

There's a poem I learned as a child about the fog coming on little cat's feet. It sits silently looking over the city. I always thought it was a very charming metaphor. Thanks to google I can attribute the poem to Carl Sandburg. This little collage reminded me of that poem.

February 30 in 30 Days- Day 6

Cat Collage #2, Stretching
Altered magazine pages, stencils,
and acrylic. 6.5 X 4.5

Another one for the cat lovers. I've always admired the flexibility and agility of cats and wonder if we all wouldn't be more that way if we got up from rest leisurely and stretched instead of hitting the ground running. This is one of those difficult works where I think, "Is it too much?", "Not enough?". Then I give up and just let it be. I can't hit the bull's eye all the time but I can enjoy the practice.

February 30 in 30 Days-Day 5

Cat Collage Series #1
Hand painted papers, altered magazine pages,
book pages, acrylic and ink on paper sealed
with acrylic gloss medium. 6 X 8

I'm drawn to paintings with blue and orange for dominant colors. I wanted to work more of that into my collages and paintings. It's another area of exploration for me because I haven't used those colors together very much in my work. Painting every day gives me the freedom to stretch myself and try new things. Why does life get in the way of doing that all the time?

February 30 in 30 Days, Day 4

Together
Liquid Watercolor on Yupo
13.5 X 10.5

Now I have really ventured into the unknown. I have worked with regular watercolor and also acrylic ink on Yupo synthetic paper, but I had not tried the liquid pigments. I knew I wanted to put some impressionistic figures in the painting but I had never done that before either. This is how I learn, by trying. The wonderful thing about Yupo is that if you don't like the first results you can wash it off and have a "do-over". I did this until I got something that was at least acceptable to me. I discovered the more I played with it, the more messed up it got so I quit and let it dry, then sprayed it several times with fixative so that I couldn't keep trying to "fix" it. I will revisit this technique in the future, it's fun to do something different. There's something about the 30 in 30 Days that gives me the freedom to try a new thing.

February 30 in 30 Days Day 3

Bloomin'
Liquid Watercolor on paper 10.5 X 7

The third try in my wet in wet liquid watercolor experiment sort of ran together. After it dried I did some quick outlining with pen and ink and I like the effect for this piece. Just another way to make it work. The liquid yellow that I used for the centers is more opaque so that it didn't run. I was very pleased with the result because I had put the purple centers in first and I thought that maybe I'd be making mud by adding yellow on top. Since it was opaque, it just sat there and didn't mix with the purple at all. I call that a happy accident.

February 30 in 30, Day 2

Autumn Reflections
Liquid watercolor on paper

This painting almost painted itself. I misted some clean water onto my paper and started dropping in color and let it run. All I needed to do was wait patiently for the paint to settle and begin to dry, while it was still damp I added the shore line. I love the vivid colors from the liquid watercolor.

February 30 Paintings in 30 Days Day 1

Orchid Tree Blooms
Liquid Watercolor on tinted paper

Here we go again with a 30 day challenge. It's good to have the holidays behind me, the decorations all stowed away and now I have time to paint and collage to my heart's content.
I have a collection of Dr Martins liquid watercolor that I hadn't played with. I got them out and got a couple of paintings that are fun. The liquid colors are very concentrated and bright. I painted with them in a wet on wet manner to begin with, I may try a more traditional approach later in the month. We'll see where the muse takes me. I'm being nudged to collage again so I'm sure there will be those, too. Here's a link to the web page. http://www.saetastudio.com/february30-in-30-blog
See you tomorrow!
